Homelessness is an issue that has been around since time. There are homeless individuals, families, and children of all ages in every city and state in our country and all over the world. Some become homeless because of a lack of family support, no job, drug addiction, and home tradegy are a few. With homeless shelters not being able to provide a room for every homeless person in America, there are many who have to live on the street or in their car. Within the homeless are thousands of children. On top of having to suddenly leave what they know as home and loosing everything they have, but few items they can carry, these children are faced with many more heartaches. Between suddenly loosing friends, loosing everything they know, changing schools, seeing their parents depressed, learning a new routine, meeting strangers, and possibly having to face dangers, are a few of the problems in homelessness that could cause a child severe psychological damage. The majority of children who become homeless will never get past what they are faced with, and will dip into a deep depression. Because of this their grades will fall, they might become so depressed they become suicidal, and possibly develop the same cycle they are living and become homeless adults. Homelessness is a vicious cycle that can affect many people around. When a child and their family become homeless, their can be several stakeholders. The child number one, who is the one suffering the most. Children don't understand change very well, especially this type of change, and will suffer with aniexty. The parents, having to worry about how to get back on their feet while seeing their child struggle with the situation, and wondering how and what to do for their child to make sure they get through the struggle in the bast possible way. The Government is also a stake holder. They make provide assistance for food, or provide a shelter with funds to run. Officials who run a homeless shelter, have to worry with finding a bed for a family who has a child as well as providing guidance on how to get out of the situation. They would be swarmed with guilt if they had to let a child stay on the street, so i know this puts added stress on them. schools and teachers are as well. If a child has become homeless having to switch schools, if they have to, is extra hard on them, The students grades might drop and they may find it hard to concentrate. Teachers will have to find ways to boost the child's self esteem and help them work through the struggles. The schools might work harder with trying to help the family provide clothing, food, and any other assistance they can for the child.
The research question for my topic is: What are the psychological effects on children becoming homeless? How do children's moods shift with such a sudden change? How has the child's education changed as a result of becoming homeless? Has a child becoming homeless made them distance themselves from others? How many actually make a change and strive to stop the cycle of poverty? Does the child become angry towards others? How many children who were homeless committed sucide? Are homeless children and their parents offered counciling? What oppurtunities do homeless children have that allows them to still be children?
I am going to interview a lady who run the Miracle Hill Mission in Spartanburg, as well speak to the individual who is over helping homeless children in Dist 7 schools. I am having problem locating specific research for my topic.
